WasteCap Wisconsin Talk & Tour Series - The Future of Documenting Recycling Efforts
On seven Jansen Group projects, recycling results are being tracked through an online documentation program being developed through a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The program, now in its pilot stages, will soon be made available to contractors statewide for use on construction, demolition and remodeling projects. At this Talk & Tour, you will have the chance to meet recycling leaders from The Jansen Group, Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center and WasteCap Wisconsin, learn about the new online program and how it applies to the demolition, construction and remodeling at St. Anthony's Parish in Menomonee Falls. The Talk & Tour will take place on Tuesday, June 27 from 3 - 5 p.m. at St. Anthony's Parish in Menomonee Falls. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/events

DNR NE Headquarters and HGA Architects receive LEED certification
The Department of Natural Resources, NE Headquarters in Green Bay and HGA Architects new office in the Historic Third Ward of Milwaukee both received LEED certification in May. WasteCap Wisconsin partnered with Dave Shoemaker of Boldt Construction (DNR NE Headquarters) and worked with Dan Katt of J.H. Findorff & Sons (HGA Architects) to assist in the construction waste recycling efforts. Congratulations to all those involved for transforming waste into resources!

High profile projects achieving high recycling rates
Two of the state's high profile construction projects have committed to recycling construction waste and preserving the state's natural resources. Together, the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation's Weston 4 power plant near Wausau and UW Health American Family Children's Hospital in Madison have recycled over 9 million pounds of waste and have saved their projects over $193,000 by recycling and avoiding high disposal costs for dumping waste into landfills. Source: MSW Management, May/June 2006
Gershman, Brickner & Bratton, Inc. (GBB) has recently completed a detailed evaluation of the amount of demolition material generated annually by the "traditional" demolition industry in the United States. The evaluation concluded that over 115 million tons per year (2004 data point) of demolition material are handled across the United States through traditional demolition services and that the industry reuses/recycles an estimated 73% of that overall material. Massachusetts has fired the first shot in the war on waste
Source: www.enr.com
One person's trash is another's treasure and the relationship is a core underpinning of recycling. There has to be some value to the material being recycled and the value is determined by the marketplace. Massachusetts is betting on that with a bold, state-wide ban on the landfilling of most construction and demolition waste. To read the full article, visit http://www.wastecapwi.org/massban

7. USEFUL TOOLS / RESOURCES ON RECYCLING
****************************************************************

The Benefits of Greener Buildings
Source: GreenerBuildings
Because traditional buildings consume large amounts of energy and other natural resources and can harm the environment around them, there's a swelling interest in designing, building, and occupying more environmentally sensitive structures. By integrating natural resource, human health, and community concerns into building design and construction, architects and designers can create buildings that are cleaner, healthier for occupants and the environment, and which deplete fewer resources. Moreover, a well-designed "green" building can be cheaper to build and operate over the building's lifetime. Managing overflow and dumping at recycling dropoffs
Source: MSW Management, May/June 2006
A commonly encountered scene at many recycling dropoffs is a pile of material around holding containers. Besides being an eyesore, carelessly strewn recyclables pose a safety program, increasing program costs and liability issues. Read the full article at http://www.wastecapwi.org/dropoffs
