CONSTRUCTION / DEMOLITION

New construction waste facility opens to serve Milwaukee area
Source: City Wide Recycling
City Wide Recycling (CWR) is a Department of Natural Resources licensed recycling center that has been opened to service the construction industry. We recycle mixed loads of new construction waste at our facility. Just have your hauler pick up the load from your site and have them haul it to ours. They dump the load on our tipping floor and the wood, concrete/inert, metal, occ, mixed paper and drywall are then separated, containerized and shipped off to local end users.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore opens in Milwaukee
Source: Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity Newsletter, Fall 2006

The ReStore is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9am to 5pm and accepts donated material in good condition. Call Jeri Kavanaugh, ReStore Director, for more information at 414-257-9078.

Vinyl siding scrap recycling program honored
Source: Recycling Today, November 3
Beginning in 2005, VI partnered with WasteCap Wisconsin, Veridian Homes (winner of this year's WasteCap Partnership Award), Waste Management Recycle America and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to test different methods, address challenges and assess the long-term viability of recycling vinyl siding scrap from new home construction in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. VI provided funding and assisted in the planning, development and expansion of the WasteCap Wisconsin program. To read the full article, visit http://www.recyclingtoday.com/news/news.asp?ID=10563.

FOOD WASTE RECOVERY / COMPOSTING

The Cadillac of compost: the earth wins, disabled individuals win, the inner city wins
Source: fatherdomsducksdoo.com
Weed seed free and made entirely of recycled duck poop, cranberries, rice hulls, wood shavings, pickles and vanilla beans, Duck's Doo Compost is surprisingly sweet smelling. You could say it's "heaven scent"! Duck's Doo is an award winning soil conditioner that can be used in vegetable and flower gardens, tree and shrub plantings, and lawn seeding and sodding projects. The condition of the soil will determine how much to use. Learn more about Duck's Doo Compost and the secret of it's success at http://www.fatherdomsducksdoo.com/AboutCompost.htm.

COMPUTER / ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

CEA calls for national electronics recycling solution
Source: WasteAge, www.wasteage.com
The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), citing the results of a study released by the National Electronics Recycling Information Clearinghouse (NERIC), is calling for a formalized, nationwide approach to the recycling of electronics. Entitled "A Study of the State-by-State E-Waste Patchwork," the report identifies a projected $25 million in recurring annual costs or a total of $224 million that will be spent by consumers, state governments and industry in next eight years - an expenditure, the report postulates, that could be avoided if national standards were in place. RECYCLED PRODUCTS AND REUSE

Where the rubber makes the road
Source: Roads & Bridges, October 2006, www.roadsbridges.com
On the surface, this new section of Diehl Road doesn't appear much different from any other dirt or gravel road. The real difference lies under the surface, where an innovative material now serves as the road's foundation. By using this material, experts believe they have developed a road that is more durable and lasts longer than other unpaved roads, costs less for municipalities to maintain and, more importantly, drastically reduces the amount of sediment that drains into nearby waterways. What is this innovative new material? Bales of used tires. Achieving sustainability through LEED
Source: Greenbiz.com
At growing rates, green building projects across the country are achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. The key to the success of these sustainable projects is an integrated design process from start to finish, which includes building owners, developers, architects, designers, engineers and contractors. Building sustainability at stadiums
Source: Resource Recovery, October 2006
Fall is finally here, and with it come cool nights, colorful leaves and a flurry of recycling activity at football stadiums. Unfortunately, many of these venue-recycling programs will prove unsustainable. For most of the country (except, perhaps, California), the model being put forth for stadium recycling simply is not sustainable in the long term. Creating a sustainable and successful stadium recycling program requires a strong commitment from the venue management, recycling program planner and the local government.
