Maintain your WasteCap Accreditation at a Training Reunion and Feedback Loop
All WasteCap Accredited Professionals (WC AP) are required to attend a feedback loop in order to maintain accreditation. These feedback loops are an excellent way to share your implementation experiences and learn from shared experiences. Sessions are free and provide valuable networking opportunities. In Milwaukee on February 22, WasteCap Accredited Professional Dan Katt from JH Findorff & Son will share how the training program was applied to their Marine Terminal project. In Madison on March 1, the session will focus on the creation of the training program during the C&D recycling efforts at the Overture Center for the Arts. To register for a session, visit www.wastecapwi.org/training_reunion

This project won the 2006 Big Diverter Award for highest recycling rate on a new construction project. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/events.

Registration open for spring Construction & Demolition Waste Management and Recycling Training
Waste reduction, reuse and recycling allows contractors and owners to use project funds for building instead of waste disposal. This training will give you the skills you need to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. It also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. Successful completion of the training will award registrants with WasteCap Accredited Professional status. Members-Only early registration began January 15. Open registration began January 29. Registration is required and space is limited. Please register early. This training program will be held on May 17, the day after the Building Materials Reuse Association Conference May 14 - 16 (DECON 07). For more information on the training program and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/training. For more information on the DECON 07 conference, visit www.buildingreuse.org

CONSTRUCTION / DEMOLITION

Construction and demolition recycling rates climb
Source: American Recycler, January 2007
C&D recycling rates are currently growing between 5 and 10 percent annually, according to William Turley, executive director of the Construction Materials Recycling Association based in Eola, Illinois near Chicago. "We're seeing more people entering the business as well as bigger plants being put in," Turley said. The drive by many solid waste officials to promote recycling has helped increase the C&D recycling rates, he said. To read the full article, visit www.americanrecycler.com/0107/construction.html

Shingle Minded
Source: Construction and Demolition Recycling Magazine, January 2007
Concerns over asbestos and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) contained in asphalt shingles are a major barrier to recycling the material, but the industry lacks data on the real risks, according to Dr. Timothy Townsend of the University of Florida, who spoke at a session about shingle recycling at the C&D World Exhibition & Conference recently held in San Antonio. No reason to exclude computers from recycling (editorial)
Source: Appleton Post-Crescent, 1/24/07 John Q. Wisconsinite can chuck his out in the trash while Business XYZ Inc. has to pay someone to recycle its computer because it's classified as hazardous waste. What's the difference, you ask? Well, there isn't one, really. The citizen's computer contains just as much hazardous material - lead, among other things - as the business's computer. RECYCLED PRODUCTS AND REUSE

Experts getting a handle on concrete Studies under way on how it can help rather than hurt environment
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 12/30/2006 As the planet becomes increasingly covered with concrete, Tarun Naik says at least some of it could be used to help the environment rather than hurt it. Some of the negative consequences are worrisome. The production of one ton of cement, the paste used to make concrete, creates almost an equal amount of greenhouse gases. That's more than 1.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide a year, says Naik, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee engineering professor. EPPSTEIN UHEN ARCHITECTS

Taking Responsibility Beyond Design

Eppstein Uhen Architects is one of Wisconsin's largest, most diverse architectural firms, employing about 150 people. Operating under the guidance of several core values, they categorize themselves as loose-tight-loose meaning flexible, casual, creative, and approachable; tight meaning professional, trusting, detail oriented, highly skilled and organized. Successfully balancing these two factors has resulted in a culture that supports interaction and teamwork, while encouraging individual growth and initiative among staff.

For clients, this translates into contact and decision-making at the project team level, with direct communication and few layers. Empowered to make the call, teams respond quickly and decisively. The staff has a strong pride in what they do, and they do it with a sense of humor, camaraderie, and fun.

One of their core values is a commitment to sustainable design. In architecture, sustainable design is an integrated approach that considers the entire life of a building from construction to demolition. The approach supports environmental stewardship and conservation, while balancing cost and benefits. Collectively, the firm believes it is their responsibility to encourage and educate clients and staff on considering design and construction strategies that use natural resources in prudent and environmentally wise ways. They have demonstrated their commitment by designing both of their offices with sustainable options in mind. In fact, their Madison office is LEED Certified, one of only 11 certified projects in the State of Wisconsin. For more information about Eppstein Uhen Architects, please visit their website at www.eua.com.

Create a waste reduction program in your office
Source: Earth911.org
Planning is the key to any program's success. Because businesses differ so much, it's important to tailor a plan to meet the company's needs. Keep in mind - a Waste Reduction Program is not just a recycling program - it is an overall plan that also incorporates waste reduction, reuse measures, and green purchasing. A Waste Reduction Program should incorporate certain basic elements to ensure its effectiveness. To read about the basic elements, visit http://www.earth911.org/master.asp?s=lib&a=brrc/wrp_Create.asp
