City of Chicago construction and demolition debris recycling training program registration ends October 22
A limited number of seats remain for WasteCap Wisconsin’s first out-of-state training program for accreditation in construction and demolition debris recycling. The City of Chicago is offering the training on November 9th at the US EPA Region 5 office at 77 W. Jackson Blvd. in Chicago. Across the state and nationwide, owners are requiring construction waste recycling as a part of sustainable building. Contractors who know how to recycle will be at a market advantage. Debris reduction, reuse and recycling gives contractors and owners the ability to use projects funds for building instead of waste disposal. This training will give you the skills you need to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. It also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/training.

Three more EUA leaders become LEED accredited professionals
Three more key members of the Eppstein Uhen Architects (EUA) team recently passed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) professional accreditation examination to become LEED Accredited Professionals, brining EUA’s total number of LEED APs to eight. These team members include Steve Holzhauer, managing principal of EUA’s Madison office, Mark M. Smith, an EUA project manager and Sandy Weber, a principal in EUA’s Milwaukee office.

Milwaukee is looking to generate more recycling on construction projects. To make that happen, the city teamed up with WasteCap Wisconsin, a Milwaukee-based organization that offers waste reduction and recycling assistance to businesses, to get information about recycling into the hands of the people who need it most. The training initially targeted city employees and then expanded to include contractors that work on city projects, said Ann Beier, sustainability director for the city. Creating a truly healing environment with LEED hospitals
Source: GreenBuzz
The healthcare industry is in a challenging position. Healthcare providers are responsible to the communities they serve and must recognize that the environmental impacts of their facilities span both operations and construction. The root of healthcare is, after all, to "first, do no harm." Since the mid-1990s, the industry has made considerable progress in reducing operational impacts on the environment; healthcare providers now stand poised to begin transforming design and construction practices. Waste CRT in concrete
Source: Resource Recycling Electronics E-Newsletter
Waste CRT glass may soon have a new use as a concrete additive. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (Tallahassee) has awarded a $107,500 grant to Leon County to study the feasibility of using waste television tube glass in the manufacturing of pre-stressed and pre-cast concrete products. Funds from the state will be matched by $60,000 contributions from the county and its partners, including the Creative Recycling Systems (Tampa), Southern Waste Information eXchange, Inc., CDS Manufacturing and the Center for Biomedical and Toxicological Research at Florida State University (all of Tallahassee). Research will primarily focus on the strength of the finished material, as well as the possible effects of lead leaching out of the concrete. If tests indicate desirable results, a market could be created for the vast quantities of presently unusable CRT leaded glass. More information on this research can be obtained by contacting the Leon County Department of Public Works through www.leoncountyfl.gov.
