Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Training and Accreditation Program available in Chicago
Date: April 30 at The Chicago Center for Green Technology (454 N. Sacramento Blvd. in Chicago)
Registration is open for WasteCap Wisconsin’s full-day Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Training and Accreditation Program hosted by the City of Chicago, Department of Environment. Across the state and nationwide, owners are requiring construction waste recycling as a part of sustainable building. Contractors who know how to recycle will be at a market advantage. There are now more than 250 WasteCap Accredited Professionals who now have the skills to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. Reduction, reuse and recycling is allowing contractors and owners to use projects funds for building instead of waste disposal. The training also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/training.

Save money by recycling
By: Ralph McCall, Senior Project Manager for WasteCap Wisconsin
There has been a lot of talk lately about construction waste recycling. The City of Chicago requires it and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building standards provide points for it. The State of Wisconsin will soon require it on all its projects. Several leading Wisconsin contractors now routinely recycle on their projects. But many builders want to know – will it cost more to recycle on a project than the normal way of dealing with waste? To read more, visit www.wastecapwi.org/savemoneybyrecycling.

CONSTRUCTION / DEMOLITION

Sustainable Solutions: The impact of the green building movement
Source: GreenerBuildings.com
There are many reasons to build and operate your facilities in an energy-efficient manner, and as the costs of building green decreases, these are appearing more commonly in news reports and the public dialogue. Often the number one motivation, reduced energy costs are a major benefit. Measuring, monitoring, and automating your building systems ensure equipment is only in use when it is needed and that all operations are at peak efficiency. Green building is best bet for CO2 cuts in North America: Report
Source: GreenerBuildings.com
Green building practices could cut greenhouse gases in North America more effectively than any other action, according to research from Canada, Mexico and the United States. The three-nation Commission for Environmental Cooperation says buildings in North America release about 35 percent of the continent's total carbon dioxide, but with widespread adoption of green building measures, that amount can be drastically reduced quickly and cheaply. The report also looks at other environmental benefits to green building and its potential to improve worker health and productivity. ORGANICS / COMPOSTING

Don't treat building site soil like dirt
Source: BioCycle, March 2008
The Washington Organic Recycling Council (WORC), which started the Soils for Salmon project in 1999, launched a new website, www.BuildingSoil.org, and a “Building Soil” outreach campaign to change standard building practices. The mission is to help builders and developers preserve and restore native soil on building sites, using compost. These soil “best management practices” (BMPs) will soon be required by local governments around western Washington, as local codes are updated. COMPUTER / ELECTRONICS RECYCLING

No-cost and low-cost ways to green your data center right now
Source: GreenerComputing
Greening your data center, IT department, and PCs can seem an overwhelming task, requiring months of planning and corporate buy-in, as well as big-budget items that will pay off in the long run, but cause financial pain right now. But it needn't be that way. In fact, as I'll explain in this column, there are plenty of simple steps you can take today to green IT in your enterprise that take little effort, and little or no money. As I explain how to do it, I'll also show how other enterprises have done it as well, including several that recently were recognized by Computerworld as being green IT pioneers.
