WasteCap Wisconsin's Latest Results:
WasteCap Wisconsin and its clients have diverted 258,018,817 pounds of construction and demolition waste from landfills, which is 46.4 pounds per person in Wisconsin. By recycling and avoiding disposal costs, The equivalent of 82,479 trees have been saved by recycling wood and cardboard. WasteCap Wisconsin’s construction and demolition projects are currently achieving an average 72.3% recycling rate. WasteCap has saved its clients $1,118,053 in avoided disposal costs by recycling C&D debris.

Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Training Program offered at ABC of Wisconsin Winter Convention
Date: February 22, 2008
Location: Chula Vista Resort, Wisconsin Dells
WasteCap Wisconsin will be offering the full-day Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Training Program at the ABC of Wisconsin Winter Convention in Wisconsin Dells. Across the state and nationwide, owners are requiring construction waste recycling as a part of sustainable building. Contractors who know how to recycle will be at a market advantage. There are now more than 140 WasteCap Accredited Professionals who now have the skills to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. Reduction, reuse and recycling is allowing contractors and owners to use projects funds for building instead of waste disposal. The training also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. Course fee is $400 for WasteCap Wisconsin members and conference attendees and $550 for nonmembers and those who are not attending the conference. WasteCap Wisconsin has been hired by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to develop an online searchable database of haulers, processors and end markets for Wisconsin’s construction and demolition debris. During the construction of this tool, we are looking for Wisconsin companies (haulers, processors and end markets for construction and demolition debris including asphalt, brick, cardboard, carpet, ceiling tiles, concrete, drywall, scrap metal, pallets, shingles and wood) who want to sign up early to be included in this directory which will be available for public use in 2008. Senate Committee passes recycling amendment

A secret no more, recycling was acknowledged for its contribution to fighting climate change by the United States Senate committee drafting the climate change bill, S. 2191, according to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) president Robin Wiener. The amendment introduced by Sen. Carper, co-chair of the Senate Recycling Caucus, strengthens recycling as a tool against climate change in two ways. To read the full article, click here.

High oil prices improve asphalt shingle recycling market

More and more companies are seeing the potential of using the material and products created by the recycling of asphalt roof shingles, says William Turley, the executive director of the Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA). The key is that the bitumen used to hold together the asphalt shingle is made from oil, and bitumen has risen recently to $350 to $400 a ton, while only a year ago it was $200 a ton. San Francisco school buses to run on restaurant grease

Blue Sky Bio-fuels, Oakland, Calif., has partnered with San Francisco’s Greasecycle program to convert waste grease from local restaurants into biodiesel for area school buses. The program was launched in November. Michael’s Transportation, Valllejo, Calif., will receive the biodiesel for use in its fleet of 80 school buses, which services numerous school districts around the bay area. Waste Management and Sony announce television trade-up offer

Houston-based Waste Management (WM) and Sony Electronics are expanding their electronics recycling initiative by offering a $100 coupon for a new Sony BRAVIA high- definition television to anyone who drops off an old television at any one of the 79 WM eCycling Centers throughout the country. The coupons will be offered until March 15, 2008. WM and Sony started the program in August 2007 and plan on having 150 recycling centers by the summer of 2008. Electronics companies form recycling joint venture

Three leading electronics brands have established a new electronic product recycling management company, Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Company, LLC (MRM), to manage collection and recycling programs in the United States. The new company's first activities are focused on providing cost effective services to manufacturers who must satisfy the recently enacted requirements in Minnesota for the recycling of used electronic products. Wisconsin Solid Waste Legislative Update, January 2008

While several of the bills have been languishing for several months, AB 560 on the sale and purchase of scrap metal has attracted a lot of attention – with 31 groups lobbying on it. A new bill on mercury-containing products and an upcoming bill on electronics could also attract a lot of attention. The last regular floor session of the Legislature ends on March 13, 2008, so the calendar is already looming as an important limiting factor. To read the full legislative update, click here.

New life cycle assessment tool for buildings unveiled

Several organizations recently launched a new tool that helps architects and engineers construct greener buildings. The latest ATHENA EcoCalculator for Assemblies uses expertise and data from the ATHENA Institute's Impact Estimator for Buildings and the U.S. Life Cycle Inventory Database to project a building's climate change impact. It can be used for a slew of building projects ranging from new construction to industrial, residential, office and institutional designs. To read the full article, click here.
