WasteCap Construction & Demolition Recycling Training Program - Public Training in Waukesha available
September 9, 2008 from 9 – 4 p.m. at the Waukesha County Administration Building
Across the state and nationwide, owners are requiring construction waste recycling as a part of sustainable building. Contractors who know how to recycle will be at a market advantage. There are now more than 250 WasteCap Accredited Professionals who now have the skills to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. Reduction, reuse and recycling is allowing contractors and owners to use projects funds for building instead of waste disposal. The training also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/training.

The project is the first model for State job site recycling and winner of the 2007 Big Diverter Award for highest recycling rate for demolition waste. Working on a State job now or in the future? What will you be required to do? Attend this Talk & Tour to find out more. For more information and to register, visit www.wastecapwi.org/events.

CONSTRUCTION / DEMOLITION

County officials expand recycling to construction sites
Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Aiming to be more environmentally friendly, county officials have stepped up recycling of discarded materials from county construction and demolition sites. Materials that otherwise would be headed to a landfill are instead being reused as building supplies, landscaping additives — and even artwork. By instructing contractors to separate wood, metal and other recyclables whenever the wrecking ball flies, county officials estimate that they have kept more than 600 tons of material from going to waste. Construction and demolition debris recycling remains strong
Source: American Recycler, July 2008
A slowdown in construction spending nationally – mostly residential, but increasingly commercial – is hitting construction and demolition (C&D) recyclers. C&D volumes are expected to drop this year and next, says Michael Taylor, executive director of the National Demolition Association in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. “There has been a slight drop in volumes as demolition activity has slowed,” Taylor says. While demolition is only half of the C&D acronym, demolition alone generates approximately 115 million tons of debris annually in North America. Close to 70 percent of demolition debris is recycled, Taylor says. To read the full article, visit http://www.americanrecycler.com/0708/construction.shtml#cover.

VerHalen Commercial Interiors named certified ceiling recycling contractor
Source: VerHalen
VerHalen Commercial Interiors in Green Bay, WI has been named a Certified Ceiling Recycling Contractor by Armstrong World Industries, the country’s largest manufacturer of acoustical ceilings. As a result of its designation as a Certified Recycler, the firm is now part of a national network of contractors specially trained in implementing the Armstrong Ceiling Recycling Program. The program, which is the nation’s first and longest running program of its kind, enables commercial building owners to ship old ceiling tiles from renovation projects to a Certified Ceiling Recycling Contractor who will then ship it to an Armstrong ceiling plant as an alternative to landfill disposal. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced that it is changing its certification process for green buildings through its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. A second life for cookie wrappers
Source: GreenBiz.com
TerraCycle Inc. has joined forces with Kraft Foods to "upcycle" used wrappers from cookies, energy bars and drink pouches into purses, backpacks and umbrellas. The partnership stands to divert millions of pounds of waste from landfills and provide a major coup for upstart TerraCycle, which made its name by transforming worm poop into fertilizer. Kraft will fund the collection of the packaging waste through TerraCycle's brigades, which will donate between 2 cents and 5 cents per wrapper or drink pouch to participating schools and nonprofits.
