WasteCap Wisconsin's Latest Results:
WasteCap Wisconsin and its clients have diverted 264,171,417 pounds of construction and demolition waste from landfills, which is 47.5 pounds per person in Wisconsin. By recycling and avoiding disposal costs, The equivalent of 86,790 trees have been saved by recycling wood and cardboard. WasteCap Wisconsin’s construction and demolition projects are currently achieving an average 79.9% recycling rate. WasteCap has saved its clients $1,190,893.80 in avoided disposal costs by recycling C&D debris.

Become an Accredited Professional in Construction Waste Management at Greening The Heartland 2008
June 25 in St. Louis (Holiday Inn St. Louis)
Registration is still open for WasteCap Wisconsin’s full-day Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling Training and Accreditation Program, sponsored by ReSource St. Louis, taking place during Greening the Heartland in St. Louis. Across Wisconsin and nationwide, owners are requiring construction waste recycling as a part of sustainable building. Contractors who know how to recycle will be at a market advantage. There are now more than 250 WasteCap Accredited Professionals in 14 states who have the skills to develop, manage, monitor, document and promote a successful recycling program for construction and demolition debris. The training also provides training to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points for MR 2.1 and 2.2. For more information and to register, click here.

Free online directory targets state’s construction waste
WasteCap Wisconsin launched the state’s first online directory of reuse and recycling markets for Wisconsin’s construction and demolition waste in April. The directory, named WasteCapDIRECT, is a free service for contractors to connect with haulers, processors and end markets for some of Wisconsin’s most common construction and demolition waste materials. Greening the Heartland 2008
June 22 – 24 at America’s Center in St. Louis, MO
The premier annual conference on green building and sustainability in the Midwest will be held at America’s Center in downtown St. Louis. The U.S. Green Building Council – St. Louis Regional Chapter will host this fifth annual event, which is geared toward people interested in greening their town, business, college campus or building. The conferencve will feature internationally renowned sustainability leaders in four content areas: corporate, community, education and government. WasteCap will host it’s Construction Waste Management Training Program for Accreditation the day after the conference in St. Louis. Jenna Kunde is executive director of WasteCap Wisconsin, a nonprofit that provides waste reduction and recycling education to businesses. She said many contractors hesitate to implement recycling processes because they fear there could be additional costs and time attached to them. Kunde said she changes even the most stubborn minds, though, by showing contractors they can have a positive impact on the environment in a cost-saving way that has a minimal impact on construction schedules. Vecoplan Hurricane Shredder Tackles C&D Debris in Chicago

C&D Recycling in Chicago has installed a VVZ-250 Hurricane Primary Waste Reducer from Vecoplan LLC. The dual-shaft shredder has been up and running at C&D Recycling since October 2007 processing construction and demolition debris. According to Larry Hirsh, plant operations director at C&D Recycling, the Hurricane is processing an average of 350 to 400 tons of debris per day and is capable of processing up to 500 tons. City of Milwaukee collects over 1 million pounds of electronics recycling

The City of Milwaukee is meeting the E-scrap challenge, recently surpassing 1 million pounds of computers and computer equipment collected and recycled since 2006 through the Department of Public Works’ two Self-Help centers. The fastest growing segment of the solid waste stream and a threat to environmental and human health, unwanted electronics pose a significant management challenge. In addition to an ongoing collection of computer equipment at Self-Help centers, the City of Milwaukee hosted a successful electronic scrap collection day that included televisions on April 26, 2008 thanks to a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Goodwill Industries wants Congress to fix growing e-waste problem

Goodwill Industries is urging Congress to assist in the development of a recycling and reuse infrastructure for unwanted electronic products. In testimony before the House Committee on Science and Technology, Goodwill described the complicated challenges facing nonprofit organizations that accept donated televisions, computers and other electronic waste. Goodwill is increasingly seen as a solution for what to do with old computers and other electronic products. To read the full article, click here.

Kraft Distribution Center earns gold LEED-CI certification

Kraft Foods has received its first Gold LEED-Commercial Interiors certification for a distribution center. Kraft and ProLogis, a distribution facility manager and developer, worked on improvements to the 800,000 square foot center near Chicago. ProLogis completed the building in 2007 and Kraft leases it. Together they worked on adding efficient HVAC system, fluorescent lighting and other improvements. During construction, almost all trash was sent to recycling centers instead of landfills, and about 80 percent of wood-based materials were from Forest Stewardship Council certified forests. Green Building > It's not pretty, but it runs clean

Anyone who thinks all green buildings are shimmering towers of glass and steel can be forgiven for that mistake. Landmarks for the movement, after all, are soaring temples of natural daylight and engineering wizardry. But experts say most U.S. commercial buildings can be turned green without spending tons of money, bringing in construction cranes or making any change that can be seen from the street. LEED 2009 on the horizon

The U.S. Green Building Council began seeking public comment this week on LEED 2009, the latest incarnation of the current certification systems for commercial buildings. The group plans to combine the updated rating guidelines with an enhanced third-party rating system and improved LEED Online in what the USGBC calls LEED Version 3.0.
