CONSTRUCTION / DEMOLITION

Removal is just the beginning: What do you do with that pile of leftover C&D?
Source: MSW Management, March 2008
So you have brought down a building and torn up a foundation. What was once a complicated structure of brick, concrete, steel, drywall, wood, and a dozen other materials has been reduced to a pile of rubble by explosions, wrecking balls, and simple crowbars. Now what? Treat it as waste and haul it off for final disposal in a landfill? Or do you process it further and use it to create new building materials and other useful byproducts? This article focuses on the last alternative and examines the equipment and the processes that are needed to properly recycle bulk quantities of construction and demolition (C&D) debris in a cost-effective and timely manner. AB 546/SB 284 would provide DNR with citation powers for open burning and the storage of scrap tires without a license or in violation of an approved plan of operation. SB 397 would require manufacturers of specific electronic products to set up recycling programs for them and ban specific products from being disposed of in landfills.
