collect and recycle electronic scrap at no cost to consumers. It provides
flexibility to electronics makers, allowing them to partner with retailers =

Waste Management Takes E-Waste Recycling to Heart=

Already the nation's largest residential recycler, Wa=

Management announced that it was signing on to the Basel Action Network's
E-Stewards Pledge to responsibly recycle electronic waste. By signing the
pledge, WM agreed to keep toxic e-waste out of incinerators and landfills, =

not export any e-waste to developing countries or to prisons for recycling,=
and
will recycle and track its e-waste through the entire recycling stream. Ear=
lier
this year, WM teamed up with LG and Sony to encourage responsible recycling=
of
e-waste, and plans to open e-waste recycling centers in every state in the
country with the goal of being within 20 miles of 90 percent of the U.S.

The Electronics TakeBack Coalition and the Basel Action Network are
withdrawing from an EPA-led e-waste standards committee, noting that the
proposed results will fail to meet their three basic criteria for responsib=

recycling. The three basic standards that both environmental groups agree a=

baseline priorities for responsible recycling are that toxic e-waste should=
not
be exported for disposal if the recipient countries have laws against such
imports; that e-waste shouldn't be incinerated to acquire the valuable meta=
