WasteCap saves businesses $1 million by recycling
Released April 17, 2006

Milwaukee, WI - WasteCap Wisconsin, a statewide, nonprofit organization, announced today that it has saved its clients over $1 million in avoided disposal costs by recycling and reusing construction and demolition waste on prominent developments within the state. In addition to saving money, these projects have had a positive impact on Wisconsin's waste stream by diverting over 73 million pounds of waste for recycling and reuse in the past ten years.

"We believe businesses can celebrate recycling successes for the environment while saving money," Susan Buchanan, Executive Director of WasteCap Wisconsin said. "We're excited to announce this great milestone on Earth Day and on our 10 year anniversary "

Since Earth Day 2005, WasteCap's projects have recycled almost 18 million pounds of material comprised of wood, cardboard, metal, concrete and asphalt. WasteCap's wood and cardboard recycling alone has saved more than 17,900 trees in the last year.

"WasteCap has been busy over the last year, partnering with many of Wisconsin's top construction companies, architectural firms and waste haulers to get results," Buchanan said. "We look forward to another year, and hope to save business even more money through recycling construction and demolition waste - having a significantly positive effect on the state's waste stream."

Besides recycling, WasteCap's accomplishments in the last year include the development of an educational program to train contractors, owners, architects and waste haulers on how to develop successful construction and demolition waste management programs. WasteCap is also working with a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to make online documentation of recycling results available to contractors statewide.

WasteCap has worked on more than $2 billion of construction and demolition projects since 1997, collaborating with contractors and owners to develop environmentally-responsible waste management plans and document the results.

Some of WasteCap's prominent projects include the Madison Gas & Electric Cogeneration Facility in Madison; Epic Systems Corporation Business Campus in Verona, Marine Terminal Lofts in Milwaukee and Wisconsin Public Service's Weston 4 Plant in Wausau. These projects have recycled a cumulative average of 68% of their construction waste.

During Earth Week, WasteCap is celebrating recycling successes through partnerships on current projects. J.H. Findorff & Sons of Madison is working with WasteCap on the $78 million American Family Children's Hospital in Madison and is currently achieving an 88% recycling rate. Oscar J. Boldt Construction is achieving an 84% recycling rate with the help of WasteCap on University of Wisconsin Medical School's Interdisciplinary Research Complex in Madison, a $134 million project.
