WasteCap Resource Solutions latest results
WasteCap Resource Solutions and its clients have diverted 273,912 tons of construction and demolition waste from landfills, which is 98.6 pounds per person in the state of Wisconsin. An equivalent of 127,796 trees has been saved by recycling wood and cardboard. WasteCap Resource Solutions’ construction and demolition projects are currently achieving an average 74.6% recycling rate.
WasteCapTRACE is online
WasteCap began the much-anticipated roll-out of WasteCapTRACE this month. WasteCapTRACE is WasteCap’s new online documentation program that allows users to track ongoing construction and demolition debris recycling and document the results.
WasteCapTRACE streamlines the entire recycling tracking and documentation process. It saves time and resources on every project by reducing time spent calling haulers, tracking numbers and calculating results. With WasteCapTRACE, project numbers are easy to find, track or change. It also gathers information required by governmental entities and certification programs (including LEED and Green Guidelines for Healthcare) and provides an easy way for you to comply with documentation requirements.
Introductory Webinars
WasteCap will be hosting free, online demonstrations to introduce WasteCapTRACE. Please join us to learn more about the program.

Green ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ project successful
On Sunday, January 24, ABC aired its first-ever "green" episode of 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition', a project for which WasteCap documented the debris reuse and recycling for both the deconstruction of the old house and the construction of the new house. WasteCap spent a week in November in Buffalo, NY with ABC’s ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ team to manage waste for the special project. The project diverted 870 tons of waste from landfills by reusing and recycling, achieving a 93.3% diversion rate; easily surpassing the project goal of 75%!

WasteCap members promote E-Cycle Wisconsin on WI Public Radio
Sarah Murray, communication and recycling specialist for the DNR Materials Management Program, and Toral Jha, executive director of AROW appeared as guests on Wisconsin Public Radio on Tuesday, January 5 to promote E-Cycle Wisconsin and product stewardship. E-Cycle Wisconsin collects and recycles certain electronic devices. Product stewardship assigns primary responsibility for collection and recycling to the manufacturer. E-Cycle Wisconsin collects electronics such as computers, desktop printers, and televisions. Eligible Electronic Devices (EED’s) include fax machines, and DVD players and keyboards. To register with E-Cycle Wisconsin, collectors must register annually with the Department of Natural Resources.
Madison recycling law means more materials will avoid landfill
More usable waste material – such as clean wood and metals from roofing projects, construction sites and demolitions – will bypass the Dane County landfill under a Madison recycling law that took effect January 1.
And while it’s too soon to say how well contractors will follow the law during the height of the construction season, early reports from builders and city officials are positive.
“It not only saved us money, but it made it easier and better for us to recycle,” said Mike Vilstrup, a Cross Plains-based builder who helped hammer out a final version of the rules as president of the Madison Area Builders Association. Continue reading…

Recycling now required on state projects as of January 1, 2010
Wisconsin should see less construction and demolition (C&D) debris in its landfills come the first of the year. A unique partnership among two state agencies and WasteCap has shown that C&D projects throughout Wisconsin can successfully recycle. Based on these results, the Division of State Facilities will be requiring C&D waste to be recycled rather than put in landfills. This will apply to State of Wisconsin construction projects over $5 million and demolition projects advertised for bid after January 1, 2010. The efforts will reduce waste disposal costs, conserve landfill space and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Continue reading….
