4. RECYCLING NEWS
Calculating the Gross National Trash
Source: Greener Buildings
More than 15 years ago, I received some data that changed the way I looked at trash. It came in the form of an obscure presentation by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official to a September 1992 teleconference hosted by the Center for Industrial Services at the University of Tennessee. The document was an eye-opener. According to Jim Lounsbury, then in the EPA's Office of Solid Waste, the pile of trash that had become the focus of public concern — the so-called "landfill crisis" — municipal solid waste, or MSW, comprised only a tiny piece of the overall waste disposal picture. There were several much, much bigger piles of trash created by industrial activity to which no one was paying attention. Meeting Planners Aim for Less Trash

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Meeting planners are joining forces to reduce the amount of garbage their events generate as part of the Million Tons of Trash Challenge. COMPUTER / ELECTRONICS RECYCLING
Electronics Recycling Legislation Introduced in Wisconsin
Source: Joe Van Rossum, SHWEC
Senate Bill 107 has been introduced in the Senate. This product stewardship bill would require manufacturers of video display devices, computers and printers sold to Wisconsin households to assume responsibility for the collection and proper disposal of electronic devices. It establishes e-recycling goals based on market share and allows for the sale or banking of e-recycling credits that exceed these goals. The bill provides an additional incentive to recover electronic devices from rural counties. The bill also bans the landfilling or incineration of certain electronic devices.
Manufacturers, collectors, retailers and recyclers are regulated under the bill. All except retailers must register with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The bill imposes minimal regulatory requirements for local governments.

USGBC Sees Green in Stimulus Bill
Source: Construction and Demolition Recycling Magazine
The $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 includes allocations that could result in billions of dollars used for green building, retrofitting, energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Much of the spending is earmarked for federal facilities, as well as in state universities and local schools.
While energy efficiency will get much of the attention, the spending on renovations, new construction and green building products could provide opportunities for contractors and makers of basic materials, including recycled-content materials.
