Seventy riders participated in the Beyond Design Bike Tour on Aug. 19 raising $10,000 for WasteCap Wisconsin and The Bike Federation of Wisconsin. Eppstein Uhen Architects conceived of and planned the event to celebrate their recent expansion with an 84-mile trek from their downtown Milwaukee office to their new downtown Madison office.
The idea of a bike ride was conceived as the ideal event for the celebration because it reflects that "we are an ambitious, healthy and spiritually youthful group. We enjoy challenge, and we thrive on achieving the impossible," Steve Holzhauer, Principal for the new Madison office, said.
Vice President of Eppstein Uhen's Milwaukee office, Rich Tennessen noted that the name of the tour was chosen to highlight Eppstein Uhen's core value of "going beyond design" in all the communities that they serve.
"The Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin and WasteCap seemed like logical choices-- given our commitment to work in the sustainable design field," Tennessen said.

"It was a great opportunity presented to us by Eppstein Uhen, a dedicated member of WasteCap, to highlight our mission "transforming waste into resources." In addition, it was an honor to ride along side with them and other dedicated professionals from the built environment, celebrating their commitment to the environment and the opening of their new office. The added bonus was doing an activity that I love," Susan Buchanan, WasteCap Wisconsin's executive director and bike-enthusiast said. "We would like to give Eppstein Uhen Architects our thanks for their support, and I am really looking forward to doing the ride again next year."
Eppstein Uhen Architects plans to reverse the route and run the next Beyond Design Bike Tour from Madison to Milwaukee. The date is tentatively set for Sept. 15, 2006.
