Onyx Talk & Tour -Thursday, November 20th, 2004

Held at Onyx Special Services: Electronics Recycling Facility in Port Washington, WI. This was a opportunity for building owners, facility managers, demolition contractors, electrical contractors, and other professionals interested in electronics and mercury recycling to hear from the largest recycler of fluorescent tubes in the US, network, and share information and resources.

Participants learned the rules for disposing of fluorescent tubes, how tubes are recycled, their liability for proper disposal of fluorescent tubes, other mercury-containing devices, computers and other electronics. Addressing the issue was WasteCap Wisconsin, Onyx Special Services, and the Southeast Wisconsin Waste Reduction Coalition.

The Talk & Tour was an educational open house highlighting Onyx's facility and abilities, and was a great opportunity for all to learn about proper disposal of fluorescent tubes, electronics and mercury. Onyx is the largest recycler of fluorescent tubes in the US and they are continually striving to make it safer and easier for people to comply with the complex regulations that require businesses, institutions, and government facilities to recycling their mercury containing lamps and other lighting and electronic waste.

"Small businesses in Wisconsin are often unaware of the many regulatory requirements that surround the disposal of fluorescent bulbs and our goal is to help educate these businesses on what is required through Onyx's example" said Jenna Kunde, WasteCap Wisconsin's Executive Director. At the Talk & Tour attendees got a chance to tour Onyx's facility, hear about Onyx's recycling efforts, share information with other attendees, and ask questions. "Proper disposal of these toxic items benefits everyone, the businesses, our communities, and the environment" said Kunde.
